Senior Advisor, Office of the CEO and Founders of Google
Commencement Address at San Jose State Universite, 2007
"In life you make the small decisions with your head and the big decisions with your heart."
Don't be defined or limited by the steps you have taken in life or the degree you have chosen on. Don't worry that you have no idea what to do next or even if you do, don't get so married to that idea that you miss you 'aha' moments. Get started but be very honest with yourselves, listen to your guts, take risks, be positive, don't be afraid of mistakes, keep learning and growing.
Unlike what you have learned in geometry and calculus, in the real world, sometimes the only way to figure out the proof is to challenge the givens. Always push yourselves, think like an immigrant, keep putting yourselves outside your comfort zone. You've always been taught to plan ahead and be calculated with your decisions but this is your start up phase, your chance to keep an open mind and experiment. Certainty is a moving target. Our first few steps won't be perfect. They never are; but missteps are not missed steps at all. They are opportunities for learning a new perspective.
